1-Octyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide CAS 178631-04-4

1-Octyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide

Description:

1-Octyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide, commonly referred to as [OMIM][TFSI] or [OMIM][NTf₂], is a hydrophobic ionic liquid (IL) recognized for its unique set of physicochemical properties. This organic salt exists as a liquid over a wide temperature range, including room temperature, and is characterized by its high thermal stability, low volatility, good ionic conductivity, and wide electrochemical window. The presence of the longer octyl chain on the imidazolium cation, combined with the bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide anion, imparts significant hydrophobicity and influences its viscosity and solvating capabilities. These features make [OMIM][TFSI] a highly sought-after material for applications in electrochemistry, particularly as electrolytes in advanced battery systems and supercapacitors, as well as a stable medium for organic synthesis, catalysis, and various separation processes.
