Description
Tetrabutylammonium tetrafluoroborate (TBATFB), CAS 429-42-5, is a quaternary ammonium salt. It consists of a central nitrogen atom bonded to four butyl groups (tetrabutylammonium cation, N(C4H9)4+) and a tetrafluoroborate anion (BF4−). This compound is widely utilized in electrochemistry as a supporting electrolyte due to its good solubility in organic solvents, wide electrochemical window, and reasonable conductivity. It helps to increase the conductivity of non-aqueous solutions and minimize ion migration effects in electrochemical studies. TBATFB is also employed as a phase transfer catalyst in organic synthesis, facilitating reactions between reactants in different phases. It is typically a white crystalline solid. While primarily a laboratory and industrial chemical, it is not generally considered a “pharmaceutical product” for direct therapeutic use, but it can be crucial in the electrochemical analysis or synthesis of pharmaceutical compounds.
