Product Description

β-Estradiol (also known as 17β-Estradiol or E2) is the most potent and predominant naturally occurring estrogen in females, primarily synthesized in the ovaries. It plays a vital role in the development and maintenance of female secondary sexual characteristics, reproductive tissues, and the regulation of the menstrual cycle. Pharmaceutically, β-Estradiol is extensively used in hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to manage menopausal symptoms, in the treatment of female hypogonadism, as a component in hormonal contraceptives, and in therapies for certain types of cancer.

Product Properties

Property Description
Chemical Formula C18H24O2
Molecular Weight 272.38 g/mol
Appearance White or creamy-white, odorless, crystalline powder
Solubility Practically insoluble in water; soluble in alcohol, acetone, ether, and solutions of fixed alkali hydroxides
Type Estrogen hormone (most potent endogenous estrogen)
Primary Source Ovaries (pre-menopause), testes (small amounts), adrenal glands (small amounts); can be synthesized
Mechanism of Action Binds with high affinity to estrogen receptors (ERα and ERβ), modulating gene expression in target tissues.

Product Usage

β-Estradiol is a key pharmaceutical agent with a broad range of clinical applications, including:

  • Menopausal Hormone Therapy (HRT): Widely prescribed to alleviate moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms (e.g., hot flashes, night sweats) and vulvovaginal atrophy associated with menopause. It is also used for the prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis.
  • Female Hypogonadism: Used for estrogen replacement in individuals with conditions leading to deficient ovarian estrogen production, helping to induce and maintain secondary sexual development.
  • Hormonal Contraceptives: A common active ingredient in many combined oral contraceptives, transdermal patches, and vaginal rings to prevent pregnancy.
  • Treatment of Certain Cancers: Employed in the palliative treatment of advanced androgen-dependent prostate cancer and certain types of metastatic breast cancer in appropriately selected patient populations.
  • Gender-Affirming Hormone Therapy: An essential component of feminizing hormone therapy for transgender women to induce and maintain female secondary sex characteristics.
  • Research Applications: Utilized extensively in biomedical and pharmaceutical research to investigate estrogenic pathways, develop new hormonal therapies, and study endocrine functions.
