Glutaraldehyde
Properties
Density 1.06
Melting point -5 ºc
Boiling point 100 ºc
Refractive index 1.373
Water solubility miscible
Colorless or light yellow transparent liquid with irritating special odor. Soluble in water, soluble in ethanol, ether and other organic solvents. Active nature, easy to polymerize and oxidize, react with compounds containing active oxygen and nitrogen. It is not flammable, but can be flammable when exposed to open flame and high heat.
Method
Synthesized by hydrolysis of acrolein and vinyl ether.
By acrolein and vinyl ether with zinc salt as catalyst, at 90 ℃, 0. lMPa pressure, cyclization into 2 an ethoxy a 3,4-=hydroxypyran, and then by hydrolysis to open the ring, the conversion rate of 95%.
Uses
In oilfield chemicals, it can be used as a bactericide of water-based oil well fracturing fluid, crosslinking agent of cellulose, etc..
Glutaraldehyde as a water treatment biocide can be widely used in the sterilization of circulating water system, it can effectively control the number of microorganisms in various water systems, it can effectively strip biological slime and biofilm, the input amount is generally 50~lOOmg/L. It has the characteristics of quaternary ammonium salt series biocide, it has the characteristics of quaternary ammonium salt series biocide.
It has the advantages of quaternary ammonium series bactericides, no foaming, easy to use, and good performance with corrosion inhibitors.
In practice, glutaraldehyde is often used in combination with other agents such as quaternary ammonium salt.
Safety
25% aqueous solution rat oral LD50: 2. 38mL/kg; rabbit percutaneous LD50: 2.56mL/kg.
Irritating effect on respiratory mucosa, eyes and skin, but much smaller than formaldehyde, glyoxal, vapors are tolerable at room temperature, often deal with glutaraldehyde solution, it is best to wear rubber gloves and protective glasses to avoid direct contact with the human body.
